Among the competitors for Best Director were the once married Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker”, and James Cameron for “Avatar”. It was hard to predict a winner for this group seeing as “The Hurt Locker” seemed to be a favorite for the Oscars.
Kathryn Bigelow’s name was the one called; “The Hurt Locker” was such a success it ended up snagging the award for Best Picture as well. The Iraq War drama clearly had an affect on audiences, Bigelow was the first woman in the 82-year history of the Oscars to earn Hollywood’s top prize for filmmakers.
”It’s so extraordinary to be in the company of my fellow nominees, such powerful filmmakers, who have inspired me and I have admired, some of them for decades.”
Bigelow also went on to express how it was a moment of a lifetime. Cameron was seated right behind Bigelow at the Oscars and joined a standing ovation for her, clapping vigorously and exclaiming, “Yes, yes” after she won. Clearly, no hard feelings on his end, it is a shame Avatar did not get the chance to take home a higher award after all the great feedback he received!
