The Power of Emmy

Stepping out of the limo on the Red Carpet at the 2010 Emmy’s I immediately was blinded by the sun, flashing cameras and photographers shouting to the celebs around me like Tina Fey, Anne Margaret, Keiffer Sutherland, and Kim Kardashian. Everywhere you looked was someone famous and those that weren’t were walking as slow as possible to take it all in while security constantly shouted to move it along, forcing the crowd into the Nokia Theater. My Angela Johnson RockStar Vintage recycled TShirt ball gown quickly became a focal point, with everyone wanting to know who made it, and if they could take a picture of it. The hoop skirt underneath gave it a Princess kind of feel, while the Rock Star edginess balanced it in such an unexpected way. It really made people smile, and for me, that is what made it a piece of art. The perfect dress sure can open doors, and this one swung them open wide with streams of people throughout the night asking about it. It did made me think though, “why don’t more people push the envelope?” Our clothing should be a unique expression of who we are, and the chance to really shine at a worldwide media event like the EMMY’s should bring out every unknown unique designer creation and put them on the map. It is risky putting yourself out there and open to criticism, but if you can’t be who you are, why bother? From the reactions of the Emmy crowd, people are dying to be entertained, and to see something different, so I think next year I will have to style all the nominees, and bring Survival of the Prettiest to the masses. No more little black dresses. I am so bored I can’t stand it.

At the after party it was fun to watch Heidi Klum and Seal, Brooke Burke from Dancing with the Stars, and Emmy winners letting their hair down. I didn’t have to do much to start networking, just stand or sit there, and let the dress do all the work. The most guarded hard to reach level of people instantly were transformed, reaching out because they just had to know…who made that dress? As I headed out at the end of the night with the Paparazzi behind me I silently thanked my dress and let her know how much she means to me. I will retire her to the premier mannequin in my Lip, Lash, and Flash Lounge, and although her rein with me on the red carpet is over, she will always have a special place in my heart. She will always be EMMY to me.
