Fashion Industry Careers: I Dream of…Fashion Blogging

Fashion Blogger with Laptop

As social networking became this generation’s “communication style of choice,” fashion blogging is finding its niche’ within the design industry. Young fashion bloggers are becoming celebrities in the eyes of their blog readers and are idolized for their clothing, style, photography, and writing skills.

Readers are privvy to snapshots into the lives of fashion journalists, specifically fashion bloggers, who appear to live an ideal style lovers lifestyle: free clothes, designer collaborations, runway show invites, exclusive interviews, and the perfect photographer boyfriend. What is unseen to the public is the responsibility, time, energy, and money that goes into a fashion journalist’s career; the path from blogging to Vogue (also known as the bible) is long and competitive.

Fashion Blogging 101

Get a BA or BS in Journalism, giving yourself a strong educational foundation.

Maintain your own fashion blog and social media accounts and allow fellow bloggers to guest post for you  — creating a cross-communication between bloggers.

Weigh the pros and cons between Blogger and WordPress.

Find your niche’ within the blogging world; one that will make you stand out from the others. While readers enjoy seeing street style photographs and your daily purchases, repetition is too common in this industry.

Familiarize yourself with Photoshop or other photo editing software.

Maintain a communication between yourself and those who comment.

Host giveaways & request sponsorship. Remember that sponsorship comes with experience and time and is NOT about getting free products and is instead about supporting a company or designer.

Intern with established fashion blogs (God knows there are thousands out there).

Know the key players’ names in the fashion blogging world and inquire as to how they grew and continue to maintain success within the industry (i.e Rumi Neely, Bryanboy, Tavi Gevinson)

Guest blog. Guest blog. Guest blog.

Create a Google Reader account to store your favorite fashion blogs in. Organizing your references is key to inspiration.

Anyone can be a fashion blogger, but it takes a key style intuition and the time to dedicate to make a name in the industry.
