Thoughts: Absolutely loved this collection. The presentation was set-up on two different platforms. One side was dramatic and bold with jewels, color, satin & a bold lip while the other platform was more tailored and oriented towards daily women’s wear, with neutral colors and softer shades.

MBFW – Nautica Fall 2011

Today I had the chance to check out the presentation of the men’s Nautica Fall 2011 collection at the Donald & Mary Oenslager Gallery inside the library at Lincoln Center. Check out some of our highlights from the presentation!

About: “The Fall 2011 Collection is inspired by the Maritime Heritage of the Sleeping Bear Dunes region of Lake Michigan, part of America’s Great Lakes region. From the deep blue waters that wash up against high, neutral sand dunes, to the pops of orange that honor our Coast Guard, this is where you seek the renewal and inspiration of all things natural and active.”

Key Pieces: Cargo Pants, Belted Trenches, Pleated Slacks, Down Puffer Vests, Toggle Coats, Blazers, Turtlenecks, Crew-neck Sweaters

Color Palette: White, Grey, Black, Orange, Royal Blue, Camel, Red, Stripes, Cream

Accessories: Beanies, Toggle buttons, Fingerless gloves, Solid-colored shoes

Thoughts: From a female perspective, I enjoyed the presentation. It had an obvious fall/winter tone with the colors, fabrics, textures, & styles. The set-up from light to dark separated into three sections was a nice way to display the clothing. This is a very wearable collection from Nautica for the upcoming Fall and Winter. Models weren’t too shabby either!

MBFW: W Hotels Global Glam FALL/WINTER 11

Last night, February 10th, W Hotels debuted it’s newest Global Glam collection of clothing and accessories for their second presentation at Lincoln Center. Models posed on platforms as photographers snapped shots and guests oohed and aahed.  Crimson was found to be the stand-out color of the season for W Hotels (as well as other F/W 11 collections at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week).  At the presentation it appeared on lips, dresses, necks and shoes!

Designer Ann Yee is known for her obsession with detail. From buttons to seams, zippers to pleats, Yee pays close attention to each design.  This season, Yee has created a collection she describes as “abstract romanticism.”  The fanciful F/W 11 collection includes a pleated gown, romper, over-sized sweater dress, slit blouse, seamed capri, pencil skirt, moto jacket, seamed dress and torqued trouser.

The color scheme stayed true to Yee’s motto, “subtle with a hint of drama,” as it consists of soft greys, blues, and maroon. In an interview, Yee told me the collection has been inspired by the poem “When I Have Fears” by John Keats. It’s obvious that her garments mirror the poem’s themes of romanticism, magic and love.

During the presentation, Yee’s models wore dyed tights and dark lipstick (a trend we have seen in other F/W 11 collections). Their hair was pulled back into tiny braids and pinned sporadically.

I enjoyed the collection and found it to be very versatile. I particularly loved the black jumpsuit, titled “all in one” and the sculpted dress. I feel Yee’s work is classic and has the ability to transcend trends seasons to come.

The collection’s inspiration: “When I have fears,” John Keats.
When I have fears that I may cease to be
Before my pen has glean’d my teeming brain,
Before high-piled books, in charactery,
Hold like rich garners the full ripen’d grain;
When I behold, upon the night’s starr’d face,
Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,
And think that I may never live to trace
Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance;
And when I feel, fair creature of an hour,
That I shall never look upon thee more,
Never have relish in the faery power
Of unreflecting love;–then on the shore
Of the wide world I stand alone, and think
Till love and fame to nothingness do sink.

“Approachable, avant-garde, couture – IMPROVD.”

Fashion News Live attended the opening of Improvd’s new flagship store this morning in the Meatpacking District. The RTW collection launched last year and is sold both domestically and internationally at a variety of different department stores and speciality boutiques.

Their collection was displayed at the store through installations, live models and holograms of models wearing the clothing. All of the looks were very minimalistic and sophisticated, colors ranging from olive green to a cream beige to black. One thing I noticed was the mixture of textures and fabrics, giving all of the clothing the appearance of high quality. Materials like leather, wool, knitwear, denim are all mixed, washed, over dyed, and distressed to give a raw, wearable look. There price points are also reasonable, as Improvd creators, Valentino Vettori and Sam Ben-Avraham think couture should be available to everyone, not just the “elite”.

Thanks to Improvd for having us out & be sure to check out for more information!

Nicole Richie and Bergdorf Goodman kick off MBFW F/W 2011

20 degree weather is not stopping New York from fashion week!  Last night, February 9th, Nicole Richie kicked off the start of Mercedes- Benz Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011 with a party at Bergdorf Goodman. The night was in honor of her vintage line Winter Kate | House of Harlow 1960. About fifty people (including myself) gathered on the seventh floor to sip champagne, nibble on macaroni and cheese crab cakes and mingle amongst fellow fashionistas. The verdict: a fabulous time.

Nicholas K Fall 2011: “Into the Wild”

“New York, NY, February 6th, 2011: For the Fall/Winter 2011 season, designer Nicholas Kunz and her brother/business partner Christopher Kunz will show their Nicholas K collection at Lincoln Center during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on Thursday, September 10th at 9 am in the Studio. This will be the second time the brand will kick-off MBFW, following last season when Nicholas K was the first show EVER at Lincoln Center.

Hailing from Arizona, Nicholas and Christopher grew up spending a lot of time in the outdoors and love to go fishing and camping. After living in New York City for several years, the brother & sister duo decided to finally look for a refuge in Upstate NY where they could bring their dog (the popular Boxer, Jake, who always makes the runway exit with them after their shows) and participate in the outdoor sports they love. This search for the perfect cabin, surrounded by protected land with reservoirs, trails for hiking, forests for hunting and streams for fishing, became an inspiration for this upcoming Fall collection.

As Nicholas explains, “For our Fall collection, I was inspired by the woods and rustic living; the survival instinct and going back to primitive ways. The fall colors of the forest are reflected in the palette and overall aesthetic and I used a lot of texture and incorporated Navajo inspired prints. Think log homes, gypsies,  stone fireplaces, owls, camping and migration.” Movies such as The Wilderness Family, A River Runs Through It, Legends of the Fall and Into the Wild also served as inspiration.

The collection features fabrics such as; rich corduroys, hunter green silk velvets and butter-soft lambskin and warm Mongolian furs. Key styles include chunky hand-knit cable sweaters with hand knotted leather buttons, tiered ruffle skirts that can be worn as dresses and many pieces are made with multifunctional details. Colors include rust orange, hunter green, evergreen, moss, birch, snow, harvest, bark and mud brown. This season, Nicholas has collaborated with Vintage Shoe Co. to create limited edition  boots, including a unique “Creeper” update, which will be shown in several colorways and used for both men’s and women’s looks. Napoleon Perdis will the doing the make-up, with Rodney Cutler as the lead artist for hair, Nails by Dashing Diva and Tom Guinness styling (a first time collaboration for the brand).”
